To the Students, Parents, and Staff of Quilcene:
During our several trips to the peninsula while moving from our previous home in Eastern Washington, my wife and I have been amazed with how welcoming everyone has been and we look forward to becoming members of the Quilcene community. I would like to specifically thank the staffs of both the district and school office, Mr. Lis, and outgoing principal Dr. G. for their insight and support.
For the past six years I was a teacher and principal intern for Rosalia, a rural K-12 school of around 200 students thirty miles south of Spokane. During this time, I gained a great appreciation and passion for small schools. Academically, I was greatly impressed with the achievement kids were able to experience when teachers actually knew the needs of each student and personalized instruction was a reality rather than a philosophy. Socially and emotionally, it gave me great hope in our combined futures when I saw students from dramatically different backgrounds and belief systems form lasting friendships.
I believe strongly that because people work and learn best when they feel comfortable and welcomed, one of the primary responsibilities of an effective principal is to make sure schools are safe, fun, and enjoyable. Consequently, I will work to ensure Quilcene continues to be a school where students want to go rather than feel they have to go. Likewise, I believe the principal’s office should be a positive place where students, parents, and the community feel welcomed.
Over the summer I will be available by phone at (360)765-2906 or email at smoss@qsd48.org for any questions concerning activities taking place over the summer or about the upcoming school year. However, if able I would like to invite you to stop by in person, introduce yourself, and give me insight on what makes Quilcene a great school and community.
Thank you and GO RANGERS!
